A cough. A sniff. Cold. Slippery roads. Chattering teeth. Building crumbling. Pipes being destroyed; hands, cheeks, whole faces rosy red.
As of recently, the heating system has become a major problem and is in need of repair, creating a problem in the use of this historical building. In 1897, the Oshkosh Recreation Building purchased their own heating system, but as of today, it does not meet the standards of today’s typical safety expectations.
If the rec is not able to meet the needs to purchase a new system, they will have to relocate, leaving this historical building empty. This will impact our community because not only do activities take place there, but it was once home to the All-Stars. As of today, the gym is still used to host basketball or soccer practices, activities for the community and activity planning/ signing up.
Imaging having to wear your winter coat, mittens, boots and your hat inside because all you feel is a cold gust of wind running down your back and up your sleeves. You feel as if you are trapped outside in a blizzard and there’s no way to keep warm. You can hardly function because your hands are too cold. If the rec doesn’t get a new heating system this could be what it may look like. Would you wanna work or go to school freezing in the winter because of no heat? Would you be able to think straight or would you be too worried about shivering to keep warm? Many people don’t think about things like this, because it’s something we never usually have to worry about.
